elcome to ATV Direct, Advanced Technology Ventures'
newsletter designed to keep you updated on the latest ATV and portfolio
company news, while providing insights on emerging market trends. ATV
Direct is being distributed to our network of friends and colleagues,
including portfolio company executives and limited partners.
The past few quarters have been
challenging for investors and entrepreneurs alike. Continued volatility in
the public markets, the threat of war, a decline in capital spending, and
a dearth of IPOs and acquisitions have resulted in an increasingly
cautious investment climate.
However, there are a number of
bright spots on the horizon. Security, wireless communications, and data
center management continue to hold tremendous promise, as well as
companies with novel technologies that address unmet needs in both the
medical device and life sciences sectors. Regardless of the market, proven
business models, seasoned management teams, and back-to-basics
fundamentals will be the cornerstones of success this year.
FOCUS: Software and
Services
In the ever-changing market for
software and services, successful companies are able to realign their
strategies and assumptions to fit the direction of the market. Today's
frontrunners are focusing on articulating a clear value proposition and
demonstrating ROI to audiences with increasingly constrained budgets. Now
more than ever, it is critical for software companies to pool the
expertise of people who have helped numerous companies navigate the
complexities of dynamic market conditions.
ATV's Software and
Services practice includes seasoned professionals in Data Management, Web
Services, Enterprise Applications, Middleware, Security Software, and
Consumer/ Small-Business Software.

Portfolio company profile: UpShot
Corp. More companies have realized that the key
to increasing sales effectiveness is optimizing the processes,
information, and interactions between sales, marketing, and customers...
in essence, sales-focused CRM. At the same time, ASP models are becoming
more prevalent and attractive to IT buyers since they can be up and
running quickly without a heavy up-front investment. UpShot has positioned
itself at the intersection of these two trends, providing a robust,
Web-based CRM solution focused entirely on increasing sales. In 1996, ATV
first funded UpShot, subsequently adding ATV Partner Steve Baloff to the
